ns a home mission field. It is a little more
than a year ago I came to this county, by
the advice of brother J. Lewis Shuck, who
is, under God, the lather of many young
men in tlio ministry in California. I found
it a hard field. Baptists had been carried
away by unionism. Wo commenced with
a church of four members, and by the as¬
sistance of your Home Mission Board, and
tho churches through them, wo have la¬
boured .to preach Christ to tho people.
And what is the result?, Tho little church
of four now numbers thirty-three. An¬
other church of sixteen members has been
organized at Benicia. Two of our mem.-

I hit r Brother :
Yours of April 2!uh is at hand. Thank-
you for your remembrance of
ш,
My
health, for some time past, has been quite
feeble, and [ feel so unwell to-day that 1
am Marcely able to write. True, l havo
nothing very special, hut if I felt otherwise
I could say something of matters in general
respecting uur work in this quarter. Last
Sabbath wo had the largest collection of
people that 1 havo seen at preaching in this
part of the Nation at any time. A goodly
number from tlio several denominations
eamo out to Lear ns. I labored Saturday,
Saturday night and Sunday to the extent of
my feeble strength, which leaves
то тега
loch c than ] was. I feel deeply interested
in the vvuik, and am trying to do all I can,
but as yet there seems hut little effected.
I have had no interpreter this year, till tho
1st of May, only as one could be picked up
for the occasion ; but 1 have lost but little
time on that account. Thero seems to bu
more seriousness among tho people just now
than usual. Tho sickness that is abroad,
the number of deaths, and tho great scarcity
of bread-stuffs are calculated, or ought to
he, to make them serious. If tho present
crop fails, I cannot tell what wc shall do, I
hope, crc this, brother Holman has recover¬
