God knows her name Jane* tenderly washed her daughter's sores. "Mommy, I'm tired of these sores," Maria* cried. "Why do we have to live here?" As Jane gently applied the homemade ointment, she said, "So that we can tell Fatuma about Jesus." Maria looked at her mother quizzically, "Who's Fatuma?" Jane laughed, "It's just a name that came into my head!" The following day Jane and her daughter welcomed their friend who had come to call. A little girl was with her who looked to be Maria's age. Maria noticed that the girl had tropical sores like hers. "Mommy, could we give her some of our medicine?" Jane readily agreed. The two girls enjoyed playing together. At the end of the visit, Maria hoped that her new friend would come again. As she was leav¬ ing Maria asked, "What is your name?" The girl replied, "Fatuma." *Nome changed. An impossible task? 1,377,198 Kababish — 2,000,000 Nubians — 816,316 Baggara — 430,592 Kanembu — 2,638,958 Gaal'in — 76,982 Zagawa — and the list goes on — populations of people groups in the Desert Cluster (DC) of Northern Africa and the Middle East (NAME) who are unengaged and unreached by anyone with a church-planting strategy. Geographically, their homes are along the southern edge of North Africa's great Sahara Desert, primarily in the lowlands of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya, Chad, Niger and Mali. They live where the majority of the year temperatures soar, political unrest is a day-to-day reality, and infrastructure providing water, electricity, Internet and roads is poor. They live in places that are difficult and expensive for foreigners to access. To stay is even more of a challenge. Most of these people have not rejected the Good News; rather, they have never even heard the news that Jesus died for them.
