Report of the Executive Secretary - Dr. Baker J. Cauthen
Dr. Cauthen emphasized the deep significance of items contained in his report, as
a matter of record. He requested special prayer on behalf of the meeting of the
Board in October, at which time items of great importance will be presented. A
large budget will be a matter of deep concern, for adoption for 1969. A large
number of missionary candidates are scheduled for presentation for appointment on
Tuesday evening, October 8, at 7:30 p.m. , in the First Baptist Church.
The following report was filed:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Baker J. Cauthen
Since the last meeting of the Board, we have been in Brazil for the Layman's Congress
on Evangelism and to West Africa to participate in the meeting of the Baptist World
Alliance Executive Committee, and visited several West Africa fields.
It is encouraging to see the concern and enthusiasm in Latin America for the Crusade
of the Americas which is now about to begin. Latin American Baptists have given
themselves with great ioy to this remarkable undertaking, and we pray God's richest
blessings upon their efforts.
We wish to keep in mind that another significant evangelistic effort is being made
shortly in the Philippines where approximately forty- five ministers, musicians and
laymen from this country will assist Philippine Baptists in a special evangelistic
effort from November 10 to December 8.
It is encouraging to see the ministries being extended in West Africa, both in
Liberia, Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria. It is gratifying to know that steady advance is
now being made in the French-speaking countries of West Africa. Plans are underway
to place in the great city of Dakar a missionary couple as soon as they complete
their study of French in Paris. We will be limited in these countries in West
Africa by the fact that in the former French areas the American dollar is penalized
so that only a portion of the true buying power is available. This makes the cost
of operations abnormally high in these lands, and will have bearing upon developments.
The great tragedy in West Africa now is the suffering in Eastern Nigeria, particularly
in the area known as Biafra, where there are more than 100 Baptist churches and places
of work. We now have only one missionary, Rev. Bryant Durham in that section of the
country. We are grateful for his concern for the people which has led him to be
willing to be separated from his family for this ministry.
