September 10, 1974
The Foreign Mission Board held its regular monthly meeting at 3:00 p.m., September 10,
1974, in the Baker James Cauthen Chapel, Foreign Mission Board headquarters, Richmond,
Virginia. The President, W. 0. Vaught, Jr., presided.

The President called the meeting to order.
J. R. White, Board member from Alabama, led in the opening prayer.
The President recognized Scott Humphrey, local Board member, who had just returned
from a very significant overseas trip with Dr. Charles W. Bryan, secretary for Middle
America and the Caribbean.
Mr. Humphrey brought greetings to the Board and expressed his deep appreciation for
the privilege of accompanying Dr. and Mrs. Bryan on this journey. He stated his
overwhelming gratitude for the many opportunities for fellowship with the nationals
and for the gracious welcome that was extended.
Board Minutes for the meeting July 30, 1974 were approved.
The President recognized the Executive Secretary, Baker James Cauthen.
Dr. Cauthen extended a cordial welcome to the Board members and expressed deep appre¬
ciation for their continued loyalty in attendance and for their many contributions
to all facets of the foreign mission program. He welcomed the Area Secretaries who
had just returned from overseas tours and temporary residences.
Dr. Cauthen brought brief references on the highlights contained in his report.
Strategic points of interest, looking toward the annual meeting of the Board, October
7-9, 1974, were mentioned:
-- The presentation and approval of the 1975 Board Budget -
— The Board-Staff Seminar, to be held on Wednesday afternoon and evening,
October 9, through Thursday and Thursday evening, October 10 -
-- All facets of missionary appointments and what happens after their appoint¬
ments -- to be discussed at length -
The organizational structure through which the Board does its work -
-- Strategic sessions on "Advance Plans" --
Special mention was made of an outstanding feature of the forthcoming annual meeting
at which time Alma Hunt, executive secretary of the Woman's Missionary Union, will
be recognized in the light of her approaching retirement.
Report of the Executive Secretary
We welcome back to the Board today many of the area secretaries who
have been away for extended periods. Dr. Hughey and Dr. Davis Saunders
have spent many months on their field and indicate that their time abroad
has been of much significance.
