REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
We have gathered for a significant meeting of the Foreign Mission Board. One of the
important matters will be the election of a new president, inasmuch as Mr. L. Howard
Jenkins who has served for thirty years will rotate off the Board in May in keeping
with the constitution of the Southern Baptist Convention.
At the April meeting we will pay tribute to Mr. Jenkins and undertake to express to
him in some degree the love and esteem we feel.
At this meeting we will appoint twenty-three new missionaries bringing the number to
an all-time high of 1,607. These, with the ten missionary associates now in service,
give a total of 1,617. It is anticipated that the next appointment service in Decem¬
ber will be even larger.
We are also to consider the budget for 1963 • It will be the largest budget ever
adopted by the Foreign Mission Board. Advance calls for increasing financial re¬
sources. The operating budget must be increased more than a million dollars each
year. The amount of increase for 1963 is $1,156,978.45. The operating budget will
total $14,427,907.96.
This is the first time we have brought together the operating budget and the Capital
Needs Budget. This is being done in order to show the full financial requirements we
face.
The specific items in the Capital Needs Budget will be appropriated by the Board as
the funds actually come to hand. It will be observed that money for Capital Needs
will come from the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
In studying the amount for capital purposes for 1963, it is interesting to review
the capital expenditures for the last five years. These expenditures are as follows:
** In addition to the operating budget, there is being presented the estimated budget
for capital needs for 1963 amounting to $6,000,000 giving a total budget of
$20,427,907.96.
