The Board met in called session at 10 A. M.
with the President presiding*
The meeting was opened with prayer by Brother
F. F. Gibson.
The following were present:
Local Members: Jenkins, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Wicker,
Miss Foster, Slaughter, Bryant, Gwathmey, Mrs. Moore, Har¬
ris, Dr. Loving, Mrs. Atkinson, Matthews, Montague, Binford,
Cousins, Gaines. Coleman.
State Members: F. F. Gibson of Kentucky; J. H.
Anderson of Tennessee; F. A. Davis of Maryland; Walter P.
Binns of Virginia; J. M. Kester of North Carolina.
Also Executive Secretary Maddry, Asst, to Exec.
Sec’y, Miss Ford, R. S. Jones, Field Secretary
On motion, Brother George W. Leavell, our mis¬
sionary, was invited before the Board for a hearing on cer¬
tain charges against him originating in China, and Dr.
Maddry was asked to read the charges.
Brother Leavell then was invited to appear before
the Board. He was accompanied by two of his brothers,
Frank and R. Q,.
Dr. Maddry then read letters from M. T. Rankin of
our South China Mission, Brother Robert E. Beddoe, P. H.
Anderson and Dr. Ma-Chun-Wu, Dr. Hayes, Ex. Committee,
Saunders, Frank Leavell was permitted to make a statement
and then Dr. G. W. Leavell was asked to make any statement
he wished.
The Board then adjourned for lunch at 1.15 to
assemble again at 2 P. M.
Afternoon Session
The session was opened with prayer by Brother
J. M. Kester.
On motion, Brethren Davis, Gaines and Gibson were
appointed a committee to prepare a resolution in regard to
the charges against Dr. G. W. Leavell and report as soon as
possible to the Board.
A lease to the following purport was adopted:
LEASE
THE TRUSTEES OF THE PRESBYTERIAN COMMITTEE OF PUBLICATION
hereby lease to the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern
Baptist Convention the space now occupied by said Board on
the Third Floor of the Presbyterian Building, #6 & 8 North
Sixth St., Richmond, Virginia, and storage space in basement
of said building now being used by the Foreign Mission Board
for a period of three years on January 1,1935, to Decem¬
ber 31, 1937, for the sum of $158.33 per month due and pay¬
able on the first of each month, the first payment being
due February 1, 1935.
It is agreed between lessor and lessee that within the pe¬
riod, January 1, 1935, to March 31, 1935, this contract
may be terminated within thirty (30) days on written notice
by either party. However, beginning May 1, 1935, this con¬
tract shall be binding until termination of the full period
of the lease.
Included in this contract will be light, heat, water, use of
elevators, and the janitor service usually furnished in
office buildings. In the event of interruption of use of
office by said Lessee, occasioned by fire or any other form
of accident, the Trustees of the Presbyterian Committee
of Publication agree to suspend collection of rent until the
space is again put in order for occupancy.
