in the First Baptist Church with Dr. Badgett presiding.
Dr. Riddle read a Scripture passage and led in prayer.
Dr. Cauthen gave the following report of the Executive Secretary:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Meetings of the Foreign Mission Board are made memorable by the appointment of
missionaries. When this Board was established 121 years ago few people were ready
to give their lives to ministries in far-away lands. Today the scene is greatly changed.
Approximately 200 missionaries in all categories are appointed annually and the num¬
ber is expected to increase as we press toward an objective of 5,000 under appointment.
The October meeting of the Board is highlighted by another important event: The
adoption of the Budget for next year. This is no small matter! It involves the
sum of $27,000,000 for this vast work, which is $2,000,000 more than the year before.
Where does this money come from? This is a very personal question because it comes
from people -- old and young, rich and poor, city people, and rural people. It
comes from Baptists throughout the extent of the nation as more than 33,000 churches
unite their efforts for Christ in a world mission outreach.
These funds come to the Board in two main streams.
First, there is the Cooperative Program. This is a channel by which Southern Bap¬
tists provide the basic support for their endeavor at home and throughout the
world. Two-thirds of the Cooperative Program remain in the State Conventions to
support the evangelistic, educational, and state mission responsibilities near at
hand. The remaining one- third of the Cooperative Program reaches the Southern
Baptist Convention where it is distributed to the Convention agencies for theolo¬
gical education, home missions, foreign missions, and all other Convention respon¬
sibilities .
The Cooperative Program will provide $11,780,000 for the 1967 Budget which will be
considered at this meeting.
The second main stream of financial support is the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
This Offering arises out of the prayer concern for missions of hearts which long
for a greater worldwide witness for Christ than would be possible without it. In
the 1967 Budget the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering will provide $7,314,000 for
the maintenance of missionaries and ministries on the fields. The Lottie Moon
Offering will also provide $5,500,000 for land and buildings for missionararies '
residences, hospitals, schools, churches, publishing houses, and other purposes.
