REPORT OF EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
The final figure of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering is now complete. It has
reached a total of $6,121, 585* Jli which is $680,839.75 more than last year. Tnis
large amount of money is an expression of growing missionary conviction and com¬
passion as the realities of today’s world are being faced.
The administration of this money reinforces all our labor of missions throughout
the world. From the beginning of work, Woman's Missionary Union has addressed
herself to the cultivation of prayer, the study of missions, and giving, but has
recognized that the administration of funds and projection of work is the respon¬
sibility of the Foreign Mission Board.
This great amount of money, therefore, represents gifts to the overseas work of
the Foreign Mission Board and is used to meet urgent requests which have been
presented to the Board by official action of our missions throughout the world.
The sum of $2,500,000 of the Lottie Moon Offering is a part of the 1958 budget
of the Foreign Mission Board. At the semiannual meeting of the Board in April,
additional allocations amounting to $2,615,500 were approved. This approval
came after similar action by the Southwide Executive Board of Woman's Missionary
Union meeting in Birmingham in February.
The final amounts for this offering will be approved by the Foreign Mission Board
in session at Ridgecrest in June following similar consideration by the Southwide
Executive Board of Woman's Missionary Union meeting in Houston in May.
The administration of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering follows the same careful
course that applies to every appropriation made by the Foreign Mission Board for
any purpose. Needs are first studied on mission fields and are recommended to
the Board by official action of the mission organization. These needs then are
given administrative study by the secretaries of the Board. Recommendations are
then prepared and submitted first to the Southwide Executive Board of Woman's
Missionary Union and following their approval to the Foreign Mission Board for
final action.
It should be borne in mind that, although the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering has
grown remarkably, the basic dependence of the Foreign Mission Board upon the Co¬
operative Program for its financial reinforcement remains unchanged.
In 1933 when the Foreign Mission Board had a total income of $691,987, the Co¬
operative Program provided ii2.j per cent of this amount. In 1957 with a total
income of $11,270,9614 the Cooperative Program, provided h9 per cent of this amount.
