The main item of interest before the Richmond staff of the Foreign
Mission board during this month has been the meeting of the Southern
Baptist Convention that begins in Miami, Florida next week. The copy
of the program of Foreign Missions to be presented on Wednesday ni -ht
will be distributed to members of Lhe Board at today's meeting.
We are highly gratified that tie Lottie Moon Christmas Offering reached
a total of 82,668,^51.30. We received a check for one million dollars
from woman's Missionary Union of Texas for this offering.
Your Executive Secretary has had the unprecedented experience of holding
two revival meetings of one week each since we last met. It is not
frequent that I hold two meetings within a year. The first of these
meetings w s in the oruh Winston baptist Church, winston-Salem and the
second with the First Baptist Church of Raleigh. An engagement to speak
to the Kentucky meeting of woman's Missionary union in Danville, Kentucky
and on a missionary program in i. -shington, D. 0. and an associational
meeting in Newport News, Virginia added up to a month of full soeakin-
engagements.
On the motion of Dr. Long it was voted that the length of time designated
for furloughs be understood as meaning time in the United States, exclusive
of the necessary time spent in travel to the Uni tod States and return
to uhe field of service. The length of the furlough p riod soent in the
United States cannot be extended except by approval of the Foreign Mission
board. Requests for extension should be made in writing with a full state¬
ment of the reasons which necessitate the extension.
On motion of Dr. Wiley it was voted that the length of a missionary's
last furlough preceeding retirement is determined on a proportional
basis between the number of years served during the last term and the
normal term of service for his particular field. For instance, if the
normal term of service is six years, and the missionary has served only
three years of this term before retirement, his furlou 'h will equal six
months on full salary. Only in special circumstances, upon the recom¬
mendation of the Mission and with board approval, will a missionary be
returned to his field for less than a three-year period preceeding
retirement.
