Minutes of the May 27, 1872 Foreign Mission Board Meeting

A called meeting of the Board was held on Monday May 27th at 5 1/2 oclock P.M. Present Brn. Burrows, Tupper, Jeter, Curry, Keesee, Snead, E. Wortham Ellyson, Garlick, Williams & Gwathmey. Prayer by Bro. W. W. Wood, who was invited to sit with the Bd. After a statement by the Cor. Sec, On motion, 1 Resd. that Rev. G. C Lorimer be and is hereby appointed Superintendent of our Missionary work in Italy, with the liberty of establishing at Rome religious services in English. 2. Resd. that this appointment is not designed to supersede in any manner the work of our beloved Brother Dr. W. N. Cote; but only to add another accomplished laborer to the field, with whose concurrence Bro. Cote will prosecute with renewed vigor his Italian Mission. 3. Resd. that Dr Lorimer is authorised to raise Edifice in Rome; and when the funds are raised to superintend the construction of the same: and to do all those acts as the legal representative of this Board which may be necessary to secure a good and perfect title of the property to the S .Bapt. Convention - and that the cost of the Lot & building shall not exceed the amount of money raised for the purpose - and this Board shall not be involved in debt on account of the said lot and building. 4. Resd. that the salary of Dr. Lorimer while thus engaged shall be at the rate of $5,000 in Gold pr. annum. On motion, Resd. that Dr. Lorimer be requested to visit Richmond at his earliest convenience for the purpose of conferring with the Board. The committee to recommend Rooms for the use of the Board reported in favor of renting Rooms over the store of Mr. J. T. Ellyson on Main St:- at a cost of $300 per annum.
