Minutes of the May 2, 1899 Foreign Mission Board Meeting

Tuesday, May 2, 1899, 4 1/2 P.M. Regular meeting of Brd held at this hour. Present brn Winston, Willingham, Williams, Cooper, Foster, Barton, Jno. Pollard, Ellyson, Bagby, Jones, Pitt, Hatcher, Mercer. Prayer by bro. Bagby. Minutes of last two meetings read & approved. Treasurer submitted his Annual Report, & on motion of Cor. Secy same was adopted as part of the Brd's report to the Convention. Cor. Secy reported: 1. Bro. E. A. Nelson of Brazil has visited Richmond, will visit Kansas, & return to his field next fall. 2. A letter from Ky states that the will of Matthew Layne is being contested by his children, & friends there will look after the interests of this Brd in the litigation. 3. Cor. Secy is sending out letters to the pastors generally asking for small gifts from the churches during May, in order that the Brd may not be forced to borrow money again. 4. Cor. Secy suggested that it w'ld be well for the Brd to adopt a scale of rates of interest for annuities on gifts to the Brd, & on his motion the following rates were adopted: Between 20 and 30 years of age, 2 per cent, " 30 " 40 " " " 3 " " " 40 " 50 " " " 4 " " " 50 " 65 " " " 5 " " " 65 " 75 " " " 6 " " Over 75 years of age 7 " ", it being understood that the Brd will not expend the principal of such funds in any case until the death of the donor.
