The regular meeting of the Board was held Monday, May 2nd, 1898, 4 1/2 P.M. Present brethren Winston, Willingham, Ryland, Ellyson, Barton, Mathews, Cooper, H. R. and Jno. Pollard, Hutson, Williams, Thomas, Bagby. Prayer by bro. Hutson. Minutes of last meeting read & approved.
By unanimous consent the report of the Treasurer was read, and upon motion adopted.
The Cor. Sec. presented the draft of a report to be presented to the Convention as the Annual Report of the Board, which after discussion & amendment was adopted & ordered to be presented by the Cor. Secy.
Consent was granted the Com. on Mexican Missions to make a statement to the Board relative to complications in Mexico. The Com. read a letter from bro. McCormick under date of Apr 5, 1898, directed to the Board, also a letter from the Mission in Mexico presenting charges against bro. W. D. Powell under date Apr 22, 1898, and a letter from bro. Powell under date Apr 25, 1898. These were referred to Mexican Com., together with all other papers bearing upon this question. Prayer was offered by bro. Willingham for Mexico.
On motion it was ordered that the church in Guadalajara, Mex., be allowed to retain the church furniture, inasmuch as they claim the same.
The Special Com. on Africa read the following Report which after debate was laid on the table:
Report of Com. African Missions:
"At the meeting of this Board in October, 1897, the following action was taken by the Board: 'On motion, the question of whether we shall not have to make some radical changes in our work in Africa was referred to the Com. on African Missions for consideration and suggestion.'
This action of the Board was construed by us to mean the opening of the whole question of the future policy of the Board in work in Africa. At the December meeting of the Board the Com. on Africa asked that three other brethren be named who should act with this Com. in the consideration of such a grave matter.
