REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
We are happy to announce that the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering came to a grand
total of $10,949,857.35. Recommendations for the appropriation of the remaining
amount of this money have been prepared and will be presented to the Board at
Ridgecrest.
It is also encouraging to note that the Cooperative Program has shown an increase
of 7.55% from January through April over the same period last year. The outlook
is good for receiving all the appropriation from the Convention Budget plus an
additional amount for advance.
There will appear in the Administrative Committee recommendations today an item
letting the contract for the contruction of the addition to the headquarters
building. The Building Committee has worked faithfully on this matter and the
provision of these facilities will greatly strengthen the work being done.
Another important reconmendation to come from the Administrative Committee today
is for the purchase of a piece of property across the stred: from our present
parking lot. While this property is expensive, it is evident that it will become
even more expensive shortly because of the rapid building which has gone on in
this area. This matter was given careful study in the Administrative Committee
in April and was discussed in the meeting of the Board. The Committee was re¬
quested to take steps toward securing this property and has recommended its
purchase. One of the main factors making advisable this purchase is that unless
we have sufficient parking space the city building code will permit us to con¬
struct only a very small amount in addition to what we now have. It seems
imperative to protect the future by this step.
We are going to Atlantic City for the meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention.
In many respects, it is one of the most responsible times we have ever faced, and
we trust that we may have the prayers of all the Board for God's blessings and
guidance at that time.
We join with Dr. and Mrs. Stuart Grizzard in deepest sympathy in the death of
Mrs. Grizzard' s mother, who was such a faithful member of the Grace Baptist
Church in this city. We pray God's blessings and comfort upon the family at
this time.
One of the beloved missionaries to Nigeria, McKinley Gilliland, is to undergo
very serious brain surgery in Birmingham, Alabama tomorrow morning. It was
necessary for him and his wife, Dr. Martha Gilliland, to return from Nigeria
for this emergency. We join in prayer for God's blessings for him and his family.
All reactions to the announcement that the Foreign Mission Board is calling upon
Southern Baptists to place 5,000 missionaries under appointment at the earliest
possible time has been most encouraging. It seems that Southern Baptists are
ready to move ahead in a great new thrust in world missions. We pray for God's
strength and grace as we face the responsibilities ahead.
