Thursday, May 12, 1898, 4 P.M.
A called meeting of the Board was held at this hour. Present brethren Winston, Willingham, Cooper, John Pollard, Hutson, Matthews [sic], Williams, Jones, Ryland, Pitt, Bagby, Barton, Mercer. Dr. I. T. Tichenor, of the Home Board, and Rev. D. G. Whittinghill of New Orleans, were present and invited to sit with the Brd. Dr. Tichenor led in prayer.
The Cor. Secy stated that the meeting had been called in compliance with the request by telegram from Dr. Tichenor to meet him at this time. Dr. Tichenor then stated that the object of his presence here was to confer with this Brd as to the matter of sending missionaries with the American army into Cuba, the Home Brd having obtained from the Military Authorities of the United States the privilege of sending three missionaries with the army. A free and general conference on the subject followed, and on motion the following resolution offered by Dr. Pitt was adopted:-
"The Board expresses its pleasure of the presence of Rev. Dr. I. T. Tichenor, Cor. Secy of the Home Mission Board, and its sympathy with and interest in the objects which he has brought to their attention. The Board requests its Pres. and Cor. Secretaries and the Mexican Com. to hold further conference with Dr. Tichenor, and if that conference shall result in a necessity for further action by the Board, they are requested to report at its next regular session."
Bro. Whittinghill, upon invitation, spoke briefly, expressing his great appreciation of the work of both Boards.
