Dr. Hickerson read the following report of Dr. Cauthen:
During the past month the major cities of China have witnessed mass
denunciation meetings, trials and executions never before known in
her long history. In Chungking more than 70,000 people attended a
meeting where a young woman denounced her own mother as a reactionary
and demanded her death. In Canton 200 people were condemned in a
mass trial during which the presiding jua e invitee the mob to beat,
bite, and spit on the victims.
In every city, lar~e or small, the road to the execution ground is
busy. A missionary recently arrived from an interior city told me that
an execution -round was near his house and that the authorities left
the bodies lying exposed for the dogs and vultures to devour.
any Christian leaders are in prison. Dr. Joshua Yang who has so
faithfully looked after the lepers 'on Tai Kam Island has been in
prison many weeks. It is reported that Henry Lin is under arrest,
but the word has not yet been confirmed and we do not think best to
give it publicity.
Many missionaries are in prison or are being detained from coming
away, we thank God that recent word from our four missionaries in
Communist areas indicates that they are all right.
The government is using every possible means to bring all Christian
work under absolute control. A conference of Christian leaders
assembled in Peking during the last month issued a statement support¬
ing the drastic actions of the government. This indicates the
terrible pressure under which Christians are finding themselves.
Practically all missionaries are trying to come away. Northern
Baptists, Conservative Baptists, British baptists ana Northern
Presbyterians have about twenty missionaries each in Communist
China. The China Inland Mission has about two hundred. Other
groups uavc

John Abernathy has arrived in Pusan, Korea. He was met at the
airfield by Korean Baptist leaders who shed tears of joy to see
him. We are so glad he has been able to enter the country. He
will be a messenger of love and comfort tc Korean Baptists in
this time of re at suffering.
The Oz Quick family are now in Formosa. Miss Mary Demarest and
Irene Jeffers are scheduled to join them on May 10. I am planning
to visit Formosa in the next few days. Wonderful reports constantly
come of the opportunities for service on the island.
