■^he minutes of the February meeting were approved as read.
Dr. Maddry introduced Mrs. H. D. Me Carney, just arrived from Nigeria, who
presented a very urgent appeal for a doctor to be sent to the hospital in
0"-bomosho. She asked that if a doctor cannot be found Dr. Green, who has
passed the age of retirement, be allowed to return to Nigeria after a brief
furlough in America.
On motion of Dr. Evans it was voted to leave this matter to the dis¬
cretion of the Executive Secretary in consultation with the President and
the chairman of the Africa Committee.
Dr. Maddry announced that the date set aside for the Week of Prayer for
the deliverance of our missionaries in enemy controlled territory is
March 22 - 29.
Dr. Maddry stated that he and Dr. Rankin would represent the Foreign
Mission Foard at the meeting of the Executive Committee meeting in 'Nashville,
March 15 - 16. Dr. Maddry read and the board voted to adopt the following
resolution to be presented to the Executive Committee:
WHEREAS, the total property losses of the Foreign Mission Board, together
with the personal losses of our missionaries in the war ravaged lands of Europe
and the Orient, will in all probability total more than i^2,000,000 when the
facts are known,
AND WHEREAS, many generous friends of the Foreign Mission Board have
pressed upon the Board the necessity and wisdom of asking the churches for
a special offering for the purpose of replacing or making good these losses,
BE IT RESOLVED, therefore, by the Foreign Mission Board in regular
monthly session on March 9, 1944,
1. THAT in view of the fact that the receipts from the
Со-орэ
rative
Program for our current budget have continued to increase so splendidly
during the past two years, we do not deem it wise, at this time, for our
Board to ask the Executive Committee or the Convention to make a special
appeal to the churches for the replacement of these losses.
2. THAT we propose to continue our policy of strict economy with the
hope that our receipts through the Co-operative Program will be sufficient
to support our budget needs and to enable us to accumulate a sufficient re¬
serve fund to replace our losses.
We call attention, however, to the fact that, as yet, no provision has
been made in our calculations for any enlargement of our program to meet the
pressing opportunities that will confront us after the war has come to a close.
If, at the end of the war, therefore, we find that our losses are more than
we now anticipate, and that our receipts will not be sufficient to meet our
essential needs, we will then place these needs before the Executive Committee
and the Convention for consideration.
3. THAT in lieu of a special effort or offering, we urge upon the
churches the vital importance and necessity of strengthening the Co-operative
Program in every way possible so that all of the Boards, Institutions, and
Agencies of the Convention may prosper and share proportionately in the in¬
creased off e rings of the churches through the medium of the Cc-operative
Program.
