The Foreign Mission Board met in regular monthly session at. 3:30 p.m. on Thurs¬
day, March 8, 1956, with Mr. Jenkins presiding.

On the motion of Dr. Hite the following candidates were appointed as missionaries:

Each candidate gave a brief testimony. Dr. Cauthen gave the charge and Dr. Lewis
Martin led in the prayer of dedication.
On the motion of W. Rush Loving, the following report of the Building and Planning
Committee was adopted:
RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE PLANNING AMD BUILDING COMMITTEE
The Planning and Building Committee met on February 16 and 37, 1956, arc unani¬
mously approved the following recommendations to the Foreign Mission Board:
1. On satisfactory report of the condition of the soil suitable for a
headquarters building, we recommend at the March 8th Board Meeting
that the Foreign Mission Board purchase the C.F. Sauer property on
Monument Avenue and Grace Street between Hamilton Street and Kent
Road for the location of a headquarters building.
2. We recommend that the firm of Carneal and Johnston, Architects of
Richmond, Virginia, be employed as architects for the headquarters
building.

Dr. Cauthen gave the following report:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Reports from the area secretaries who are traveling on the fields indicate that,
they are having highly successful journeys.
Dr. Sadler has cabled that the needs and opportunities in c-ast Africa are tre¬
mendous. We are very happy that he is having the privilege of seeing this sec¬
tion of Africa again as plans are being formulated for entry into new areas.
For many years we have had a feeling that our ministry in Africa can be widely
ext, ended. With the rapid changes now going on in tiiat continent, the need for
such extension becomes more urgent than ever before. Dr. Sadler is expecting
to return to Richmond by the end of March.
Dr. Means is having a very successful journey to South America. His visits to
Colombia and other missions on the way to Rio were richly blessed. The reports
of the Rio Conference are most encouraging. In some respects it may be regarded
as one of the most significant meetings ever to have been held in Latin America
work. Dr. Means, accompanied by Mr. Scofield, is now visiting all the stations
of the mission in Argentina. Mr. Scofield will be returning in time for the
