Minutes of the March 28, 1873 Foreign Mission Board Meeting

A called meeting of the Board was held on friday March 28th at 4 1/2 P.M. Present Brn Wilson, Tupper, Curry, Dickinson, Williams, Goddin, Winston, Keesee, Snead Clarke & Watkins. Bro. Wilson was called to the chair, and in the absence of the Rec. Sec. Bro Wakins [sic] was chosen Sec pro temp. Prayer by Bro. Clarke. Applications were received for the appointment of missions to Brazil and Prussia, which were referred to the Comtee on New Fields. Three communications with regard to Africa (one of them in respect to Bro. Underwood decd.) were referred to the Committee on African Missions. A letter from Rev. [blank] with regard to Mrs Bucks going to China, was referred to the Com'tee on China Missions. The Cor. Sec. informed the Board, that Bro Yates has returned to China, and also that Bro Taylor had signified his intention to accept the Mission to Rome. The Com'tee on European Missions presented the following report, pending which, the Cor. Sec. presented in full the testimony with regard to the troubles of the Church at Rome, after which the report was unanimously adopted. Whereas Dr. Jeter having advised the discontinuance of Bro. G. B Gioja as a missionary at Rome; and whereas grave considerations seem to demand other and radical changes in this Mission, therefore, 1. Resd. that in accordance with the advice of Dr. Jeter, Bro. G. B. Gioja be dismissed from the service of the Board of For. Missions, and that any previous actions of Dr. Jeter in the case be and is hereby confirmed by this Board. 2. Resd. that the family of our Brother, Dr. Cote being so seriously involved in the troubles which have caused the dismission of Bro. Gioja, it is the conviction of the Board that for Dr. Cote's sake, as well as for the future peace and best interests of our Italian Missions, bro. Cote should be counselled to withdraw
