Minutes of the March 26, 1874 Foreign Mission Board Meeting

A called meeting of the Board was held on thursday March 26th at 4 1/2 Oclock P.M. Present. Brn. Curry, Tupper, Wortham, Harris, Evans, Clarke, J. B. Winston, Watkins, Williams, Ellyson & Gwathmey. In the absence of the President, Bro. Evans was called to the chair, and prayer was offered by Bro. Harris. The Com'tee on European Missions presented the following report, which was adopted. Resd. that the committee deem it inexpedient at present to authorize the purchase of a house in Rome, but recommend that the matter be held under advisement, subject to future developments. After a statement by the Cor. Sec. the following was adopted. Whereas the exigency of our Missions demands that extraordinary measures should be employed to meet our pecuniary engagements; and whereas the Baptist Churches of Baltimore, which have been liberal supporters of our Board have raised and pledged for the Missy. residence at Canton some $5,000, which they propose to send directly to China; and whereas the Board has engaged to erect said residence, and has so reported to the S. B. Convn., and intend to appeal again this year to the Convn. and the churches to furnish the means to fulfill said engagement; and whereas the Brethren at Balt. have met cordially a suggestion to hold a conference in their City on Saturday next, with members of this Board who may convene with them, though they discourage the hope that the contemplated object of that conference will be attained.
