Foreign Mission Board Booms
March 12, 1953
1
The Foreign Mission Board met in regular monthly session at 3:30 p.m.
on Thursday, March 12, 1953, with Mr. Jenkins presiding.
Present: L. Howard Jenkins, Herman P. Thomas, Perry Mitchell, Oscar
L. Hite, rs. Paul LaRoque, Mrs. Clyde V. Hickerson, J. Hundley Wiley,
to. Rush Loving, E. P. Buxton, Mrs. Tom Smith, Emmett Y. Robertson,
M. Theron Rankin, Everett Gill, Jr., ilmer 5. West, E. L. Deane,
Louis P. Seay.
On the motion of Dr. Hite the following candidates were aopointed as
regular missionaries:
Mr. and Mrs. Charles to. Campbell, Argentina
Mr. Daniel Brooks. Ray, Korea
Dr. Rankin gave the charge to the new missionaries and Mr. Loving led
in the prayer of dedication.
Dr. Rankin gave the folio-wing report:
My reoort consists of three brief but meaningful items. First, I want
to take the crivilege ofpresenting a former member of the Board as a
new member of the staff of the Foreign Mission Board. I take pleasure
in welcoming
&г.
Elmer ..est to his first meeting of the Board as Personnel
Secretary. His work as a member of our staff began in Louisville. He
was visiting in Kentucky at the time the students at the Louisville
Seminary were having a world missionary emphasis week. I asked Mr.
..est if he would stay over and attend that program and it was most
gratifying to see the way he got hold of the students. Since that
time he has been to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and to
Central Bactist theological Seminary. His experiences on the Personnel
Committee as a member of the Board gave him a very fine introduction
to the work he is now doing.
The second item is a brief letter from Dr. Porter R uth which reads:
"Dear Dr. Rankin: Enclosed you. will find a check for ql, 239,105 .98,
which represents the gift from Texas for the Lottie Moon Christmas
Offering. This makes the total received as of today, S3, 107,160. 66.
This check is only a small piece of paper, but I know it represents
consecration, prayer, and concern on the part of Texas Baptists and
will mean much to the work of missions around the world."
Along with that, I want to connect the third item. The Administrative
Committee is making recommendations amounting to $790,527 .01. This
amount is made up mainly of the over and above Cooperative Program
r ceipts received in December, toe are holding $300,000 of the over and
above Cooperative rrogram receipts to aoply on the appointment of
missionaries in
19'5й
and the balance is being appropriated today.
The balance of Forward Movement Funds and Rehabilitation Funds make
up the amount of '790,527.01.
It almost scares us, does it not? We have been praying and talking and
preaching for Southern Baptists to do something and for the Lord to do
something. It is happening and we are getting nervous about it. V.'e find
ourselves appropriating 4790,000 at one time. We have a LdtLe Moor, offering
of 83,000
that arpri
people in Washington talk in terms of millions . It ought to be perfectly
normal and routine for a Foreign Mission Board that is dealing in terms
of the world to talk in terns of millions, and to deal in terms of
millions: not as something surprising and unusual, but something that
has been expected and assumed. I believe we are coming to it. As
I said at a meeting of the Board some months ago, 1 believe that
Southern Baptists are standing on the verge of doing something big.
The Lord is moving and working and 1 think great things are coining.
Dr. Gill gave the following report:
Survey of Spanish American Bookstores
Rev. and Mrs. James to. McOavock, associated with the Spanish Publishing
House, have recently completed a tour of all Spanish-speaking America
to survey the Baptist bookstore needs in these areas. Among his
