REPORT OF EXECUTIVE SECRETARY - Dr. Baker J. Cauthen gave the following report:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Since the last meeting of our Board, sorrow has come into our midst as Dr. Harold
Basden was called to be with the Lord. The memory of his life will be a blessing
to all of us and we will continue to be benefited by his labors in our midst.
An appropriate resolution will be presented later in this meeting concerning Dr.
Basden. We extend to his wife and children our deepest sympathy in this time of
bereavement and rejoice in the radiant faith which they have so splendidly ex¬
hibited during this time of sorrow.
Another good friend of this Board, Dr. Paul Geren, was buried yesterday afternoon
in Lexington, Kentucky, having been killed in an automobile accident on Sunday.
Dr. Geren had engaged in diplomatic service, representing our country in India,
Jordan, Libya, and Rhodesia. Wherever he served, his Christian witness was mean¬
ingful and his fellowship with the missionaries was a blessing and joy.
We have extended to Mrs. Geren our deepest sympathy in this time of sorrow. He
was a personal friend to many on the staff as well as to many missionaries through¬
out the world.
We are glad to report that Miss Mary Essie Stephens, who is a member of our Board,
has been released from the hospital in Anderson, South Carolina following her
serious automobile accident in which she, her mother, and brother were injured,
although her injuries were not serious. Miss Stephens has been able to go back
to Birmingham, although her mother is still in the hospital.
Sorrow has come to the home of Mr. Everett L. Deane in that his brother passed away
yesterday. His brother had been ill for many years. The funeral service will be
conducted at Woody Funeral Home, probably on Saturday morning.
We welcome a number of new members to the Board who were elected by the Southern
Baptist Convention in its recent session. While we will have to await the full
meeting of the Board to greet the state members who were elected, we are so
happy to welcome a number of local members. Mrs. Clyde V. Hickerson is again a
member of our Board and we anticipate the delightful service that she will render
as she has many years previously.
