A called meeting of the Board was held on friday, June 23d. at 4 1/2 oclock. P.M.
Present Brn Curry, Burrows (V. Pt.), Tupper, J. B. Winston, Hawthorne, Thomas, Jones, Clopton, Cottrell, Clarke, C. H. Winston, Pollard, Harris and Gwathmey. Prayer by Bro. J. B. Winston.
At the request of the President, the Cor. Secy. stated that the object of the meeting was to consider a communication which had come to hand, from the American Baptist Publication Society. After a full discussion, the following was adopted.
Whereas, the Southern Baptist Convention at its last meeting having rejected the proposition distinctly made to it, and enforced by earnest speeches, that its Boards should report at the next meeting of the Convention, some plan whereby the Convention might take part in the great Bible work of our day, therefore
Resolved that while this Board heartily sympathises with, and bids God-speed to, all proper measures looking to the right translation, and the free circulation of the Scriptures, the recent action of the Convention forbids in our judgment that this Board should go in council with our brethren of the North, to do what, virtually, the Convention declined to allow us to do, in conjunction with a co-ordinate Board of the Convention.
Resolved that as Bible distribution was once an organic part of the work of the So. Bapt. Conv., the subject proposed by the invitation of the Publication Society would be one which might be properly presented to, and discussed by the Convention itself.
The following was presented and adopted.
The Committee on Publications recommend:-
1. That the Foreign Mission Journal be enlarged to the size of the "Commission", which was about one third larger than the Journal.
2. That an Editor be engaged to have general control of the paper, without disturbing materially the present arrangements for mailing, bookkeeping &c.
3. That $25 per month be paid to the Editor.
4. That the Editorship be offered to Prof. H. H. Harris.
A letter was received from Rev. T. C. Teasdale District Secretary of the A. & F. Bible Society for Tennessee and Mississippi, proposing to send funds which he may collect for printing and
