Minutes of the June 20, 1851 Foreign Mission Board Meeting

Richmond, June 20th. 1851. The Board of Foreign Missions (S.B.C.) met in the Mission Room at 8 1/2 oClock P. M. Present. Brn: Howell, Ryland, Taylor, Manly, J. C. Crane (Secy. of Convention), J. Thomas Jr., A Thomas, Ellyson, Talman & Gwathmey. Prayer by bro. Manly. Records or two previous meetings were read & approved. On motion, the following Standing Committees were appointed - On China Missions. Brn. B. Manly Jr., Crane & Gwathmey. On African Missions. Brn. R. Ryland, A. Thomas & Snead. On New Fields. Brn: J. B. Taylor, Howell & J. Thomas Jr. On Agencies. Brn. H. K. Ellyson, A. G. Wortham & Barns [sic] On Publications. Brn: J. S. Walthall, Bickford & Talman. On motion, so much of the proceedings of the Convention as refers to new fields of labour was referred to the Committee on new fields. The annual report of the Treasurer of the Canton Mission was received, and referred to the Committee on China Missions: as were also other communications from China. A communication from bro. Pearcy announcing the arrival of sister H. A. Baker at Shanghai; and informing the Board of ill-treatment received by her from bro. Roberts at Canton, was referred to the same committee; with instructions to enquire into the expediency of recalling bro. Roberts. The History of the Indian Tribes of the U.S. was received from L. Lea comr. of Indian affairs - on motion, the Cor. secy. was requested to return the thanks of the Board to him for it. also to Mr. E. E. Salisbury for copies of the Journal of the Oriental Society.
