A called meeting of the Board was held on Saty. June 18th at 5 oclock P.M.
Present. Brn: Jeter, Taylor, Burrows, Curry, Clarke, Goddin, Watkins, Keesee, Winston, Chambliss, Garlick, Snead, E. Wortham, Evans, A. G. Wortham & Gwathmey.
Prayer by Bro. Curry. Minutes were read and approved.
The Com'tee on New Fields presented a report, which was adopted as follows.
"The Com'tee on New Fields of labor report:-
The Convention at its late meeting in Louisville recommended the Board, as soon as the necessary funds could be provided, to enlarge its operations, and appoint additional Missionaries in Asia, Africa, and Europe. The Board has been anxious for years, as opportunities might offer to carry out the sense of the Convention. Hitherto the way was not open. Recent changes in the social and political relations of various States of Europe, seem to render feasible what was heretofore almost impossible of accomplishment. Different religious denominations are now operating in Europe with increased vigor. Our Northern Brethren have been for some years past laboring with primitive success in Germany Sweden &c.
We in our straitened circumstances have been necessarily restricted in our aggressive work, and have been unable to do any thing for the countries from whence we have derived our national origin, and many of our most valuable institutions. Besides the general indications attracting with increased interest the eyes of the Christian world, there has recently been a concurrence of circumstances which seem to make plain the path of duty. While strengthening present stations, and occupying others, we would apparently be derelict not to recognize the hand of Providence beckoning us to other fields, and not to heed the wishes of many pious and intelligent brethren.
The Com'tee therefore after full consultation with the Secretary, and availing themselves of other sources of information, recommend -
