Dr. Cauthen gave the following report:
REPORT OF EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
The recent meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Kansas City marked
a new high point in Southern Baptist life. On every hand there were indica¬
tions of answered prayer from the beginning of the Convention sessions until
the close. The interest of Southern Baptists in advancing in all phases of
all Kingdom responsibility was apparent.
Since the close of the Convention, we have been receiving many letters from
individuals indicating impressions and decisions growing out of the presenta¬
tion of foreign missions. Encouraging reports have come from people who are
well trained and experienced who have indicated that their decision has been
reached concerning foreign missions.
The Convention authorized the Foreign Mission Board to request change in our
Charter so that we would be able to have up to one hundred members of the
Foreign Mission Board as growth in Southern Baptist life will require. This
change was necessitated by the fact that the Charter of the Foreign Mission
Board specifies fifty as the maximum number of members. We now have that
number including the president of the Southern Baptist Convention. The
Charter change would enable us to be ready for the addition of Board members
as they are available through Southern Baotist growth.
One important step taken at the Convention was the naming of the committee to
give special study to all phases of challenging young people to life dedica¬
tion for Christian service. Two members of our staff, Rev. Elmer West and
Rev. Bill Cody, have been named on that committee. It is likely that the work
of this committee will be regarded as one of the most important developments
in recent years.
