REFORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
The recent meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention held in St. Louis,
Missouri was constructive and inspiring. Although Dr. Rankin and Dr. Gill
were not present with us in the body, their influence was powerfully felt.
There are many evidences throughout the Convention of a deep determination
that advance must continue in world missions. We must continue to advance
both along the lines of finances and personnel. We are fully convinced that
the number of highly qualified mission volunteers should be greatly increased.
We must concentrate prayer and study upon the important matter of presenting
the call of world missions to those who ought to answer.
The presence of Mrs. Rankin, Mrs. Gill and Dr. Maddry at the Convention made
a distinct contribution to the presentation of foreign missions.
The following state members were elected by the Convention for service on
the Foreign Mission Board: Preston B, Sellers, Florida; Arthur Rutledge,
Texas; Robert E. Humphreys, Kentucky; W. Maxey Jarman, Tennessee, E. S. James,
Texas; James W. Middleton, Louisiana; Howard M. Kinlaw, South Carolina; Mon¬
roe F. Swilley, Jr., Georgia; Eph Whisenhunt, North Carolina; Mrs. Foy J.
Farmer, North Carolina, Mrs. R. L. Mathis, Texas; Harry L, Garrett, Illinois;
W. 0. Vaught, Jr., Arkansas.
The following local members were also elected: Garis Long, Oscar L. Hite,
Howard Jenkins; Howard L. Arthur; Solon B. Cousins; T. Shad Medlin.
We welcome all of these members of the Board, some of whom are being re¬
elected to continue their service, and others are coming on the Board for
their first time. We anticipate the contribution which will be made by each
one.
Dr. James Winston Crawley, the newly elected secretary for the Orient, has
begun his work in a splendid manner. He is making a survey tour of the mis¬
sions of Southeast Asia. Reports from those missions indicate that Dr.
Crawley's visits have been very helpful and his recommendations are good.
There is a widespread feeling of confidence and satisfaction in the Orient
in the election of this splendid man for this post of responsibility.
Work throughout the Orient continues in an encouraging manner with steady
progress being made in all fields. As will be reflected in the report to
be read from Dr. Crawley, the urgent need in the Orient is for additional
missionaries. We are confident that the visit to be made by the personnel
secretary to the Orient will be most fruitful in the days to come as the
needs of this vast area are presented to young people throughout the South¬
land.
