The report of the Executive Secretary is as follows:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Today we welcome to the life of the Foreign Mission Board Dr. G. Norman Price who
comes as director of the division of publications in the Department of Missionary
Education and Promotion.
The coming of Dr. Price to this responsible place of leadership has been long
anticipated. He will fill one of the most vital roles in the life of the Foreign
Mission Board. Much of what we are able to communicate to Southern Baptists
relative to world need must be done through publications.
Dr. Price brings to this task many unique qualities. He and Mrs. Price were mission
volunteers in their student days. Each was a volunteer for the mission field before
their lives were brought together in marriage. All of their preparation was with
a view to service on mission fields. Due to a minor health problem, which was at
that time of some significance, they were not able to enter upon foreign service
but carried with them into their responsibilities at the home base their deep
missionary convictions. During the last seventeen years they have led the Parkway
Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi in a strong ministry. They are greatly
beloved, not only in their own church and the city of Jackson, but throughout the
state of Mississippi. Dr. Price has filled responsible posts in the life of the
Mississippi Baptist Convention as well as the Southern Baptist Convention. They
come into the life of the Foreign Mission Board with unique qualities of personal
character, vital experience with Christ, distinquished service in the Master's cause
and rich scholarship. We welcome them to this task and assure them of our love and
deep appreciation as they lay hold to the work that is before them.
While we rejoice in the coming of Dr. and Mrs. Price and their family, we are
saddened today by the fact that this is the last meeting of the Board at which we
will have the pleasure of Mr. Bill Dyal as a member of the staff.
Mr. Dyal is resigning his position at the Foreign Mission Board to take a position
with the Christian Life Commission to be located in Nashville, Tennessee.
As all of us will recall Mr. and Mrs. Dyal have rendered valuable service on the
mission field, first in Guatemala and then in Costa Rica. He had been named as one
of the field representatives to take responsibility in the Southern field of the
Latin American work when illness made it necessary for them to return to the States.
Mr. Dyal came into the Personnel Department as an associate secretary and has been
very effective in helping many missionary candidates come to appointment. His
presence on the campuses of the seminaries has been greatly welcomed and his
addresses on behalf of foreign missions have been warmly received everywhere.
