July 16,1918.
The Board met in called session at 4
Р.Ы.
with Brother Ellyson presiding.
Brother C. A. Jenkens, Jr., led in prayer.
The following were present: Ellyson, Mathews,
Ball, Pitt, Skinner, Johnson, Gibson, Westfall,
С.Д.
Jenkens, Jr., Mahone and Harris.
After the reading of the minutes, the Pres¬
ident of the Board stated that the meeting had been
called at the request of the Chairman of the Executive
Committee, appointed at the last meeting, and requested
the Chairman of that committee to indicate the reason
for the call. R. H. Pitt, Chairman, then stated to the
Board that .article 5 of the Constitution of the South¬
ern Baptist Convention provided that "no salaried of¬
ficer or employe of any Board may be a member thereof."
Recognizing this inhibition, he wished on behalf of him¬
self and the other members of the Committee to free the
Board from all possible embarrassment by offering their
resignations as members of the Committee. After some
discussion, the resignations were accepted.
The Board then voted to reconsider the res¬
olution under which this committee was appointed. After
■full discussion the following was offered:
"In view of the approaching visit of Sec¬
retary Love, by direction of the Convention, to our mis¬
sion fields, and his probable absence for not less than
six months, it is important that the Board should make
some definite additional plans for the conduct of its
affairs during his absence, as tt seems impracticable
to secure the services of a suitable man for this lim¬
ited time, the Board adopts the following as in its
judgment the best practicable method of dealing with the
situation:
Resolved: That three persons be chosen
as an administrative committee, to meet at least once a
week, and oftener as may be necessary, to supervise the
work of the Board and to take over in general the admin¬
istrative duties and functions of the Corresponding Sec¬
retary during his absence, as the service which will be
necessary at the hands of this committee is unusual, com¬
pensation is allowed at the rate of $5 each for each
session attended, provided that it shall in no case
exceed $10 per week for each committeeman."
This resolution was unaimously adopted,
and the Board then elected R. H. Pitt, T. Clagett Skinner
and P . P. Gibson as members of this committee.
In view of the fact that persons receiving
compensation for services rendered, cannot under the
organic law of the Convention hold membership in the
Board, these brethren then resigned from the Board, and
their resignations were accepted, after which they accep¬
ted appointment on this committee.
The meeting adjourned with prayer.
