Report of the Executive Secretary - Dr. Baker J. Cauthen
Dr. Cauthen gave a brief survey of significant items mentioned in the report that
was filed.
A special tribute was paid to Dr. Tolbert, for the many contributions that he has
made in Nigeria and in his journeys to other lands.
Special mention was made with reference to a Worldwide Evangelistic Crusade. A
decision on this crusade may materialize during the meeting of the Baptist World
Alliance in Tokyo in 1970. Dr. Cauthen referred to the action taken by the Sou¬
thern Baptist Convention in June 1968, that the Convention stands ready to enter
into such an effort wholeheartedly.
Dr. Cauthen spoke with appreciation of the very excellent manner in which the Invest¬
ment Committee (a sub-committee of the Administrative Committee) carries on its ac¬
tivities in such a quiet, efficient way that attracts very little attention.
The following report was filed:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Baker J. Cauthen
We have been profoundly shocked in receiving word of the death of Dr. Chester Quarles,
Mississippi member of our Board. He was on a journey to South America, and while
visiting Peru went to the historic city of Cuzo and died in his hotel room of a
heart attack at 5:00 a.m., Saturday, July 6.
I had just been with Dr. Quarles on the previous Tuesday in the dedication of the
new headquarters building in Jackson, Mississippi. He had served for many years as
Executive Secretary-Treasurer of Mississippi Baptist Convention work, and was greatly
beloved in his state. He will be greatly missed in the life of the Foreign Mission
Board. Our Board extends deepest sympathy to Mrs. Quarles and all the family as
well as to Mississippi Baptists in the loss of this distinguished leader.
By this time, all members of the Board have probably learned that Dr. Harold Basden
of our staff has suffered a heart attack. He is in St. Mary's Hospital and is making
satisfactory progress. The heart damage is said by his doctor to be intermediate
rather than either massive or light. We do hope that Dr. Basden will steadily im¬
prove and we assure him and his family of our continuing prayers.
The meeting of our Board today is notable in the appointment of thirty-two mission¬
aries. This will be followed next month on the evening of August 8, with the dedi¬
cation service for outgoing Missionary Journeymen. There will be more than sixty-
