The Foreign Mission Board met in regular monthly session, Tuesday, January 9,
1979; 2:00 p.m. , in the Baker James Cauthen Chapel. John W. Patterson, second
vice-president, presided.

The presiding officer called the meeting to order.
The audience joined in singing the Hymn: "I Know Whom I Have Believed," led
by Sidney C. Reber.
J. Albert Leath, Jr., Board member from North Carolina, read a passage of
Scripture and led in prayer.
The presiding officer mentioned in a special way members of the Board and
staff who had been through sorrow recently.
The Search Committee was referred to with an emphasis on the need for the
ministry of prayer by the staff and Board.
Minutes of the Board for December 12, 1978 were approved.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - Baker J. Cauthen
Dr. Patterson recognized Dr. Cauthen.
Dr. Cauthen referred to the significance of the January meeting, as the first
in the New Year. He expressed deep appreciation for the gratifying reports
from churches with reference to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
Board members and staff who have been going through illnesses and sorrow were
mentioned in a special way - M. Hunter Riggins, in the passing of his mother;
J. Leonard Moore, in the homegoing of his brother; A. F. Tuck, in his grave illness:
Mrs. Jewell Moore, in the illness of her husband and father; Harold Branch, in his
recent surgery from which he has been reported to be recovering satisfactorily; and
on behalf of Dr. and Mrs. George Hays, in the recent passing of her mother, Mrs.
Virgie Mathis. These friends were assured of our continued love and prayer support.
Special mention was made of the recent death of Fon Scofield, member of the Board
staff for almost 30 years, until his retirement in August of 1977. Dr. Cauthen
paid tribute to Fon for his leadership in the development of audio visuals as an
instrument for communicating the message of missions and for his dedicated service
in the work of the Board. Mrs. Johnni Johnson Scofield was recognized in a special
way and Dr. Cauthen spoke to Johnni of the Board's appreciation for the life of
Fon and assured her of the continued prayerful concern of the Board and staff in
the days that lie ahead.
