4 P.M.
The Board met this day in called session. In the absence of Bro. Hutson, on motion of Dr. McDaniel, Dr. W. R. L. Smith was called to the chair. Dr. Everett Gill led in prayer. The following members were present: W. R. L. Smith, Wm. H. Smith, Grace, Ball, McDaniel, Ellyson, Ryland, Harris, Dorset, Porter, Knight and Gwathmey.
[in margin] Report of Cor. Sec'y.
The acting Cor. Sec'y. presented a bill from the Williams Pr. Co. for $303.25 which was approved and ordered paid.
A request was presented from Bro. Newbrough for $100.00 per month (Mex.) instead of the $75 now allowed for salaries of teachers; also for $85.75, one half the travelling expenses of Miss Margarita Müller to the place of her appointment as missionary teacher. This was referred to the Com. on Mexican Missions.
The Sec'y. stated that the purpose of the meeting was to hear from Bro. Everett Gill concerning the work in Italy. By request of the chair, Bro. Gill addressed the Board. After a statement of the facts, and a presentation of the situation in Italy so far as our work is concerned, Bro. Gill suggested that the Board would do wisely either to plan the work on a very much larger scale, providing especially for the purchase of adequate properties in Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, Palermo and Naples, or else to retire altogether, turning over our missions to the English or Northern Baptist. A general discussion followed in which brethren Grace, McDaniel, Harris, Knight, Ryland, Porter & W. R. L. Smith participated. Dr. W. R. L. Smith on behalf of the Board thanked Bro. Gill for his interesting and lucid report.
The Board adjourned with prayer by Bro. Ellyson.
