Dr. Rankin gave a report on the December meeting of the Executive Com¬
mittee of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, at which time
a proposal was adopted to be presented to the meeting of the Convention
in Oklahoma City that for the year 19 If?, 50 per cent of the first
GU, 000,000, about 13 per cent of the next '2,300,000, and all receipts
above $6,500,000 be devoted to Foreign Missions. He pointed out that
Cooperative Program receipts have not yet ever reached the !'6,500,000
mark. However, it is hoped that because of the emphasis on foreign
missions, an amount greatly exceeding $6,500,000 will be reached. Dr.
Rankin stated that although our work in the Orient might be curtailed
to some extent because of the political situation, ?/e are ready to ad¬
vance in Japan, Africa, and Latin America, and that this offering, if
it is received, will be of great help to the Board.
Dr. Rankin also told about the gift of ‘'50,000 which was made by the
First Baptist Church of Little Rock, Ajkansas on January 9. This offer¬
ing for foreign missions was made over and above all other commitments
a d offerings made by the church and is unprecedented in the history of
the Foreign Mission Board. He stated that he believed that this was an
indication of an undercurrent on the part of many Southern Baptists to
go more than is being done for the rest of the to rid.
The meeting of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America at
Buck Hill Falls was also reported by Dr. Rankin. The most significant
development at this meeting was the overwhelming majority vote of the
Conference not to merge with the National Council of Churches of Christ
in the United States of America, thus leaving the door open for Southern
Baptists through the Foreign Mission Board to participate in the activi¬
ties and continue its very helpful relationship to the Foreign Missions
Conference.
On motion of Dr. T. Rupert Coleman it was voted that Dr* and Mrs.
С.
A.
Leonard of Hawaii be retired as missionaries of the Hoard as of March
31. Dr. Leonard will become an associational missionary for North Caro¬
lina and will notify the Board when he desires to begin receiving pen¬
sion.
On motion of Dr. Coleman it was voted to appoint a committee of three
Board members to help find a successor to Mr. Buxton, who retires as
treasurer of the Board at the end of this year. Mr. Jenkins appointed
R. C. McDanel, Chairman; Reuben E. Alley; and Clyde V. Hickerson on this
committee.
On motion of Dr. Evans it was voted that the president of the Board
write a letter of appreciation to the First Baptist Church of Little
Rock, Arkansas, to officially acknowledge the gift of $50,000 referred
to by Dr. Rankin.
Dr. Sadler gave the following report:
