REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
We take pleasure in presenting today to the Foreign Mission Board Rev. and Mrs.
William M. Dyal, Jr. who already are greatly beloved by the Board and staff
because of their splendid wo’rk as missionaries.
Mr. and Mrs. Dyal were appointed by the Board in 1953. After their language
study in Costa Rica, they served in Guatemala, where Mr. Dyal was president
of the Baptist Seminary. In 1957, upon the request of the Foreign Mission
Board they transferred to Costa Rica because of a very urgent need which had
arisen in the life of that mission. The dedication and skill with which they
handled the Costa Rica work, and the splendid way in which they served as
counsellors to the language students studying Spanish and preparation for
going to their fields in Latin America resulted in focusing thought upon them
for the work of field representative in the southern section of Latin America,
when the field representative plan was decided upon. They transferred to
Buenos Aires, Argentina and were making rapid progress in the new responsi¬
bility when illness in the family required their return to this country. We
are glad that Mrs. Dyal has recovered her strength in such encouraging way
that while it is not advisable for them to lay plans for return to the
responsibility of field representative, they are now in position to meet a
very definite need in the Personnel Department on furlough status for this
year in the capacity of personnel associate.
Mr. Dyal on a former furlough rendered outstanding service on the college
campuses in relationship to the volunteer devision of the Personnel Depart¬
ment, but now he is coming to give valuable assistance in the candidate
division, and will greatly relieve the load which has been quite heavy since
Mr. and Mrs. Stertz were appointed for missionary service in Germany, thereby
leaving a vacancy in the department organization.
We welcome Mr. and Mrs. Dyal to the Foreign Mission Board and pray God's
richest blessings upon them as they will meet a very real need in the days
ahead .
Dr. Crawley will be making a full report of the developments in the matter
of the evangelistic effort in Japan being planned for 1963. It has been a
pleasure to have several representatives of work in Japan in this country
during recent weeks, and we are particularly glad to have with us in the
Board meeting today Dr. Coleman Clarke and Pastor Yuya of Tokyo.
As has been indicated earlier, Dr. Crawley will be going to Japan in February
where he will meet with the committees responsible for the planning of the
evangelistic effort in Japan and will be in position upon his return to the
Board to give a full report with recommendations at the April meeting.
We are happy to report that Dr. Billy Graham is having such remarkable meet¬
ings in Latin America about which we will hear more today. He writes that he
will be able to spend several days longer in Japan in 1963 than had earlier
been anticipated, and will be in position to speak in meetings in several
strategic cities throughout the country.
