Dr. Rankin explained that the funeral of Mr. Jenkins' aunt, №*s.
R. E. Thomas, was being conducted at the time of the Board meeting
and that it may not be possiHe for Mr. Jenkins to attend the Board
meeting. Dr. Rankin stated that Mrs. Thomas has a unique record in
that she was present and participated in the organization of Woman's
Missionary Union of the South at the Broad Street Methodist Church,
was present when Lottie Moon Was sent out as a missionary, was presi¬
dent of the Grace Baptist W.M.U. when the first Lottie Moon Christmas
Offering was taken, and has the record of never missing a Lottie
Moon Christmas Offering for foreign missions since its inception.
Dr. Rankin introduced the following members of the Religious Focus
Week team of the University of Richmond who were visiting the Foreign
Mission Board: Dr. Arnold Ohrn, Dr. Bob Denny, Mr. Bob Norman, Mr.
Douglas Gow, Dr. Rutenber, Mrs. 0. K. Armstrong, Dr. Othell Hand,
Miss Mary Elizabeth wrenn.
Dr. Rankin gave the following report*
Of primary interest during this month is the Lottie Moon Christmas
Offering. The secretaries of the Board have given considerable time
to the listing of appropriations to be made from the receipts over
and above the regularly allocated goal of $1,200,000. The last
report indicated that over $2,000,000 had already been reported.
Almost certainly the total receipts will go beyond the 1950 offering
which amounted to a little more than $2,170,000.
The receipt of $901,000 from the Cooperative Program funds over and
above the Convention's 1951 budget has enabled the Foreign Mission
Board to release regular funds received from the Cooperative Pro¬
gram for capital expenditures. Ahe Administrative Committee is
presenting recommendations of appropriations amounting to approxi¬
mately $680,000 for capital expenditures.
January has brought a rather heavy travel schedule. Following an
engagement of five days at the First Baptist Church of West Palm
Beach for addresses on world missions, I attended the meeting of
the Executive Board of woman's Missionary Union in Birmingham,
Alabama and from there went on to spesk on the Missionary Day
Propram in the Seminary at Louisville. I have just returned from
a five days' engagement at First Baptist Church, St. Petersburg,
Florida for lectures on world missions. This was followed by an
engagement in Decatur, Alabama and an engagement in New Orleans to
speak on the program of the annual meeting of Baptist State Board
Secretaries.
From time to time the secretaries of the Board will give brief
paragraphs on such engagements in order that the Board members
may have this information concerning engagements filled by members
of the staff.
We were distressed to learn of the death of Dr. R. E. Beddoe which
took place on January 18 at his home in Shawnee, Oklahoma. More
adequate recognition will be given to his services in the COMMISSION.
We pause here, however, to register our deep gratitude for the life
and services of a missionary such as Dr. Beddoe. The sympathy of
the Foreign Mission Board has been extended to Mrs. Beddoe and her
daughters.
On the motion of Dr. Coleman it was voted to request Dr. Rankin
to make a trip to Europe this slimmer to attend the meeting of
