for this special meeting, and for the invaluable support their presence would bring.
The audience was led by Sidney C. Reber, in the opening Hymn: "To God Be the Glory."
Clyde J. Childers, Board member from Texas, led in Responsive Reading, No. 49:
"God's Love."
Dr. Childers led in the opening prayer.
Minutes of the Board for January 8, 1974 were approved as received by the Board
members.
Board members answered to the ROLL CALL.
Special mention was made of the recent accident of the Board's attorney, John C.
Williams. Mr. Williams had sustained a very painful injury which had necessitated
surgery. A brief report from E. L. Deane, the Board's treasurer, who had visited
with Mr. Williams that morning indicated that he was in a great deal of discomfort
and would be wearing a cast on the knee for approximately four weeks.
The Executive Secretary and the President of the Board recognized several guests:
Mrs. R. L. Mathis, president, Woman's Missionary Union -
Wives of Board members: Mrs. Joe L. Orr, Mrs. Meredith Roberson and Mrs. Edwin
Robertson (visiting with Mrs. Roberson) -
Dr. Jonsson, professor of English and History, University of Johannesburg,
South Africa, who was introduced by Dr. Cornell Goerner, area secretary
for West Africa.
The Board's President, W. Douglas Hudgins, called special attention to a feature
of the meeting that would be a delight - the unveiling of Mrs. Cauthen' s portrait.
Mrs. R. L. Mathis was called to the platform and recognized by Meredith K. Roberson,
chairman of the Committee on the Twentieth Anniversary of Baker J. Cauthen' s service
as Executive Secretary of the Board. One particular feature of the Twentieth Anni¬
versary Program was a portrait of Mrs. Cauthen to be presented to the Board as soon
as it was completed by the Artist, David Silvette.
