RESOLUTION
The Foreign Mission Board takes due note of the homegoing in Lufkin, Texas, on
Saturday, December 3, 1966 of Mrs. J. S. Cauthen, the beloved mother of our execu¬
tive secretary.
We express our deep thanks to God for her dedicated Christian life, which was ex¬
pressed in her devotion to her Lord, to her late beloved husband, to her sons,
J. B. and Baker James, to her many friends, and to her church, and the Sunday school
class which she taught for more than forty years.
Furthermore, we recognize her special contribution to foreign missions as a vigorous
supporter from her early years to her very last, in her Sunday school class, in her
church, in her district association, and especially in her home. She was an example
to all who knew her -- especially to her family, and her son, Baker James, in particular
in prayer for missions and the missionaries, and this Foreign Mission Board; in offer¬
ings unselfishly given, and in interest and concern for the foreign mission enterprise
of Southern Baptists.
We commend her loved ones -- especially our executive secretary -- to the Heavenly
Father whose love, comfort, and grace are all sufficient; and assure them of our
sympathy, love, and prayers in this their loss.
May the heritage of her excellent example and untiring devotion be remembered among
us and contribute a continuing source of inspiration for her loved ones and for all
of us in our Christ and His Kingdom.

Dr. Cauthen gave the following report of the Executive Secretary:
Report of The Executive Secretary
Mrs. Cauthen and I would like to express to the Board and to many individuals our
deep appreciation of your kind expressions of sympathy upon the occasion of the
death of my mother.
Her life was spent in the service of her Lord and her activities were centered in
her church where she taught an adult Bible class for forty years. The cause of
missions had such a deep place in her heart that during the funeral service her
pastor gave a good portion of his message to an expression of appreciation of her
love for missions and emphasis upon its support. The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering
had a very great place in her heart, and both in her own church and in the surround¬
ing churches, where she had contact, her influence was widely felt. She looked
forward with much anticipation to the joys of heaven and her passing was a beauti¬
ful experience of homegoing.
Her visits to Richmond were always a great delight to her particularly on those
occasions when missionaries were being appointed and she was able to see the
Foreign Mission Board in action.
A sad note has just reached my office in a letter from Charles Cowherd of Hong Kong.
The first sentences of which I will quote. "Just a note to tell you that Marian
was to have a hysterectomy operation last Saturday, November 26th, but when they
opened the abdomen they found cancer spread to all organs and so far advanced that
they just closed the incision. Dr. Langford thinks she has about three months left.
