Foreign Mission Board Rooms
December 22, 1941
The Foreign Mission Board met in called session at 4:00 P. M. On
Monday, December 22, 1941, with President Jenkins in the chair.
There were present Brethren Jenkins, Loving, R. Aubrey Williams, C-aines,
Bryant, Prickett, Montague, J. C. Williams, McMillan, Buxton, Maddry, Sadler,
Mrs. Thicker, Mrs. Moore, Miss Weeks and Miss Hunter.
The following visitors were present1 Dr. John W. Lowe, Dr. C. A. Leonard,
Rev. Samuel A. Bagby and Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Severance.
The meeting was opened with prayer led by Dr. Loving.
Dr. Maddry gave a report on his visit to Hawaii and general conditions
incident to the attack on December 7th.
On motion of Brother Montague the following resolutions were adopted:
1. That the Board create a War Emergency Council to advise with the Executive
Secretary, consisting of
Charles E. Maddry, Executive Secretary
L. Howard Jenkins, President
George W. Sadler, Secretary for Africa, Europe and Hear East
Everett Gill, Jr., Secretary for Latin America
T. F. Adams, Chairman of Committee on Africa, Europe & Hear East
C. S. Prickett, Chairman of Far East Committee
This committee under the direction and supervision of the Foreign Mission
Board and in cooperation with the Baptist World Emergency Committee
of the Southern Baptist Convention shall have oversight of all matters
pertaining to relief work, the bringing home of missionaries from war
torn lands and all other matters having to do with emergencies created
by the war. This committee has power to make necessary adjustments for
new situations that may arise, including changes in the specific
resolutions listed herein.
2. In view of the fact that the Baptist World Emergency Committee appointed
by the Southern Baptist Convention, Dr. George W. Truett chairman and
Dr. Louie D. Newton secretary, has been called to meet in Atlanta on
January 14th, we, therefore, instruct the Executive Secretary and the
War Emergency Council of the Foreign Mission Board to attend this
meeting and cooperate to the fullest extent with the southwide committee
in raising whatever sum may be necessary for the whole program of relief
in all lands where the Foreign Mission Board has work.
3. That the War Emergency Council be authorized to make every effort pos¬
sible to get in contact with all beleaguered missionaries on the foreign
fields and that the secretaries be instructed to cooperate with the
State Department and the bnited States government in every way possible
to transmit funds to these missionaries and that no reasonable expense
be spared for the relief of all missionaries and suffering peoples in
war torn lands.
4. That a special number of THE COMMISSION be issued early in January, con¬
taining the name, picture and address of all missionaries in war torn
lands, with the appeal that all of our people join earnestly in daily
prayer for the preservation and relief of all these missionaries.
5. That the Board be requested to transfer ^10,000 set aside for the Japan
Mission for 1942 to the Hawaiian Mission for emergency service in the
Islands.
6. That Woman's Missionary Union be requested to transfer the proposed gifts
out of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for 1941 for Japan to the
Hawaiian Mission for the purpose of paying the indebtedness on the
property purchased for the Missionary Training School in Honolulu.
7. That Dr. Charles A. Leonard be requested to return to Hawaii as soon as
he can secure passage for the purpose of heading up our program of
relief work on the Islands.
