Foreign Mission Board Office
December 20, 1945
The Foreign Mission Board held its regular monthly meeting on Thursday,
December 20, 1945 at 4:00 I'.M. with Mr, Jenkins presiding.
Those present were: J. G. Loving, Clyde V. Rickerson, Mrs. T. Justin Moore,
R. Aubrey Williams, George W. Sadler, L. H. Jenkins, M. T. Rankin, Hill Monta¬
gue, J. Levering Evans, E. P. Buxton, J. W. Marshall, T. F. Adams, E. C. Routh,
Mary Hunter, Marjorie Moore and Alfred D. Carpenter.
Accepting Dr. Rankin's invitation to talk to the Foreign Mission Board Dr. alfred
L. Carpenter, Superintendent of Camp Work under the Home Mission Board who has
recently returned from a visit to the Pacific Theater of war, told of his im¬
pressions and of some of the needs in the Orient with regard to our Baptist work.
He emphasized that Christ is the hope of the world. He reminded us again that
we do not have the missionary personnel needed and that it is not in sight. He
called to our attention the fact that U1JRRA had announced that they needed 800
workers in 1945 and when in Washington recently Dr. Carpenter learned that two-
thirds of these workers would be ready to go in January. Dr. Carpenter noticed
three trends in China: 1. the laymen are interested in radio owned by the Bap¬
tists in China; 2. National Baptist Convention in China; 3. More Hew Testament
churches needed in China.
It was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Dr. Rankin, having given his time to Dr. Carpenter, reported very briefly on a
few of the activities of the Board. He said Dr. Garrott and Mr. Dozier have
applied for their passports to Japan and that twelve of our missionaries are on
their way to China with the prospect in view of having most of our staff from
China on the field by spring. Dr. Rankin read excerpts from a letter from Mat-
suta
Нага
of Japan .
Dr. Rankin reported that the brochure recently sent out has been received with
great enthusiasm and interest.
Dr. Sadler reported briefly about his work. He had word through Conrad Hoffman
that Russia needs more relief funds and that possibilities for the gospel in
that country are now very large. Dr. '7.0. Lewis was denied entrance into Russia.
Dr. Sadler hopes to be on his way to Europe by the next meeting of the Board.
He read a cablegram from Dr. Rushbrooke sending greetings from the Rumanian
Baptists.
Dr. Marshall called on ur. Kankin to make a statement concerning the educational
requirements of married women who are missionary candidates. It is expected
that between forty and fifty candidates will come up for appointment in April.
Mr. Buxton gave the treasurer's report which was adopted as read.
