The Foreign Mission Board held its regular monthly meeting on December 10, 1970, at
3:00 p.'m. in the Board's Chapel, Richmond, Virginia, with Joseph B. Flowers, first
vice-president, presiding.

The meeting was called to order.
Mr. Sidney C. Reber, the Board's director of the Management Services Division, led the
audience in singing the Hymn: "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty."
Rev. Virgil Clark, Board member from Indiana, read a passage of Scripture and led in
prayer.
Minutes of the Board for November 1970, were approved, as mailed out to Board members.
Mr. Flowers and Dr. Cauthen extended a warm welcome to all who were present.
REPORTS were called for as follows:
EXECUTIVE SECRETARY - Dr. Baker J. Cauthen
Dr. Cauthen called special attention to the tragic loss in the recent homegoing on Decem¬
ber 6, of Dr. Vernon B. Richardson and explained that action would be presented to the
Board by the Administrative Committee to extend a formal expression of sympathy from the
Board to Mrs. Richardson and family.
Dr. Cauthen called the state Board members to the platform and recognized them with deep
appreciation for the service they render to the work of the Board and for their personal
efforts in attendance.
Special attention was called to an appropriation that would be presented for action by
the Board, for Pakistan and Nigeria, to help meet relief needs.
Recent engagements in which Dr. Cauthen and other members of the Board had participated
during Week of Prayer have brought very gratifying responses on behalf of the Lottie
Moon Christmas Offering.
Special mention was made of the recent conference held at the Foreign Mission Board for
approximately 60 MKs . This was the first conference of its type and the responses that
had been noted were a source of inspiration and gratification.
Dr. Cauthen referred with appreciation to the 23 young people who would be presented for
appointment at 7:30 that evening, bringing the total number of appointments for 1970 to
182.
Attention was called to the fact that, very soon, the Consultant on Laymen Overseas will
join the Foreign Mission Board staff, in keeping with previous action of the Board.
Mr. Everett L. Deane, the Board's treasurer, was called to the platform, in honor of his
having completed 40 years of service as a staff member of the Board, this week.
Dr. Cauthen paid highest tribute to Mr. Deane in his performance all through these years.
It was with great appreciation that he presented to Mr. Deane his 40-year service pin.
At the same time, a letter was presented which Dr. Cauthen asked him to read aloud to the
Board. Mr. Deane read the letter with great humility and appreciation for the confidence
and commendations that were made. He received a check in the amount of $1,000 as an
expression of genuine appreciation from the Board and expressed his gratitude for the
many privileges that had been his in serving the Board, to the best of his ability, over
this span of years.
