REPORT OF EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
The Foreign Mission Board today brings us to the close of 1959 with the appoint¬
ment of 144 missionaries. This is the largest number ever to be appointed in any
year of our history. We thank God for all the efforts which have been put forward
in prayer and ministry to make this year possible. We need to remember that the
coming of each missionary for appointment represents a profound personal experi¬
ence which has come into reality through a combination of impressions and influences.
This brings us to a total of 1,382 missionaries. Actions of the Board today will
mean that we are now at work in forty-four countries across the world. We move
into I960 with the clear purpose of appointing a minimum of 150 missionaries
in the new year and advancing geographically as God may lead.
We are now in the period of the year when Advance Program funds from the
Cooperative Program are being received. It is helpful to review what these
funds have meant in recent years. These receipts in recent years have been as
follows:
1953 - $ 998,520
1954 - 1,297,123
1955 - 1,836,620
1956 - 2,407,709
1957 - 2,445,226
1958 - 1,922,932
It is anticipated that the Advance Program funds to be received before the end
of December will total at least $1,500,000.
It will be readily recognized that the amount of the Advance Section varies
according to the Southwide Cooperative Program budget. The total amount received
by the Foreign Mission Board from the Southwide Cooperative Program budget has
steadily increased year by year. The record for recent years is as follows;
1953 - $ 4,998,520
1954 - 4,772,123
1955 - 5,311,630
1956 - 6,207,709
1957 - 6,995,226
1958 - 7,608,182
