The Foreign Mission Board met in Convention-wide session at 7:15 P.M. on Thursday,
August 19, 1965 at Glorieta, New Mexico for the appointment service with Dr. Lindsay
presiding.
Rev. Blake Woolbright read the Scripture and led in prayer.
Dr. Cauthen filed the following report of the Executive Secretary:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
By every measurement we have been experiencing a most remarkable year in foreign
mission service. The appointment of missionaries has reached an all-time high. The
creation of the Journeymen Program has stimulated much interest and enthusiasm.
Forty-six young people have been sent as the first group in this new category.
Emphasis on evangelism has brought much blessing in many lands. Brazil has experienced
the most significant nationwide evangelistic crusade in her history, and a challenge
has gone forth for a crusade of the Americas in 1969. The response to it giv® indica¬
tion of great interest and concern. Special efforts in evangelism under the leader¬
ship of Mr. Underwood in Southeast Asia and other lands have brought forth significant
results.
We are grateful to our Lord that He has continued to provide financial resources to
undergird missions advance. As we approach the October meeting of the Board, we will
be considering a budget for operating and capital requirements of more than $25,000,000.
When we consider the great contrast between the experience of our present day and those
of some years ago when we were so heavily burdened in debt, our hearts are filled with
gratitude to God and appreciation for those who in an earlier day bore such heavy loads.
The Consultation on Foreign Missions conducted in Miami Beach continues to grow in
its significance. We anticipate that this will provide material for consideration
for many months to come.
Work on the Organization Manual in connection with the Executive Committee of the
Southern Baptist Convention is now coming into its more significant stages. An excel¬
lent document "Foreign Missions: A Southern Baptist Perspective" has been compiled.
Dr. Means brought together the material which represented the thinking of numbers of
people. It is anticipated that further conferences will be forthcoming shortly and
we expect to be able to see this project brought to its conclusion by the meeting of
the Convention next year.
We thank God and give Him the glory for all the blessings which we are experiencing
in the worldwide outreach in the Master's name.
