The opening session of the Foreign Mission Board was held at 7:15 P.M. in Holcomb
Auditorium at Glorieta, New Mexico. Dr. J. Roy Clifford led the devotional period.
In order to afford more time for the testimonies of the missionary appointees, Dr.
Cauthen did not give the following report:
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
During recent weeks Mrs. Cauthen and I have completed a long journey to the missions
of Southeast Asia which took us to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaya, Vietnam, East
Pakistan, India, and Lebanon, with brief stops in Hawaii and Guam.
We are grateful for those who remembered the journey in prayer. We found it to be
one of the most valuable missionary journeys we have ever made and we have returned
with thanksgiving to God for the blessings which have been poured out upon His work.
In order to understand the remarkable developments which have come about in this
vast area, one needs to remember how recently the work was begun. In 1949 mis¬
sionary work in China was disrupted by the rise of Communism to power. By the
close of 1951, there were no missionaries of our Board left on the mainland of
China. Many of those who were vigorous in health were available to go into new
fields of service. God had been preparing our hearts for this forward thrust.
Prior to the emergencies in China, the Board had authorized surveys to be made
in certain of the Southeast Asia countries.
The result was that we have seen throughout all of East and Southeast Asia a re¬
markable advance in missionary service, including Japan, Korea, Okinawa, Taiwan,
Hong Kong-Macao, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaya, Vietnam, East
Pakistan, and now an entry into India.
The fruitage brought about by the gospel of Christ in these areas is very impressive.
One must keep in mind that in entering these fields missionaries did not have the
advantage of already established Baptist churches and trained leaders. Exception
to this, of course, was true in Korea, Japan, and Singapore, but in the other fields
an entirely new beginning had to be made.
It also is good to remember that many of these fields have been noted for the dif¬
ficulty of Christian witness. In Thailand, for instance, the first mission board
that entered required eighteen years to win its first convert. 5t Today in Thailand,
however, the response to the gospel is very encouraging and the number of churches
is heartening. *Another Board withdrew at the end of twenty years having never won
a convert .
In land after land churches have been established, buildings have been constructed
and people have been blessed.
