REPORT OF EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
Ten years ago in May at the meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Memphis,
Tennessee, the Foreign Mission Board called Southern Baptists to advance in world
missions. It is appropriate that we should pause at the end of this decade and
measure to some degree how far we have come.
The challenge to advance was set before Southern Baptists because of a deep convic¬
tion in the hearts of mission leaders that God is expecting a world ministry on
the part of Southern Baptists commensurate with the day in which we live and the
blessings He has bestowed upon us. We give glory to God for every gain that has
been made and praise His name for His grace and mercy.
At the beginning of the Advance Program there were 625 missionaries. With the
appointment of this group tonight, we now have 1,20 3- In the appointment of these
missionaries, we have noticed continued excellence in training and experience.
More men are being appointed than ever has been true in the history of the Foreign
Mission Board. The number of those who come for appointment out of places of
responsibility and excellent experience has grown remarkably. No mission board
in the world has higher standards for service than does our own. It is a cause
of thanksgiving that this remarkable advance in personnel has been made with con¬
tinued maintenance of' high appointment standards.
The financial picture gives us reason to thank God. The income of the Foreign
Mission Board ten years ago was $4,7314,288 for the year. This represented gifts
through the Cooperative Program, designated, gifts, and the Lottie Moon Offering.
In the year we have just closed, the income of the Board from these sources was
$13,921,Ы;9.27.
The income of the Foreign Mission Board from all sources for the
year we have just closed was $1U, 208,678.80 with $82,011.26 in addition for relief.
The dedication of life and prayer that stands behind this growth in missionary
giving brings joy to every heart. In particular we are impressed with the re¬
markable growth of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. The total Lottie Moon
Christmas Offering as of today is $5, 966,1475 *73- It is our hope that by the
end of this month when the bcoks on the Offering are closed, the figure will have
reached $6,000,000.
