The Board met on Monday evening, April 5th. at 7 1/2 oClock.
Present. Brn. Howell, Taylor, A. Thomas, Snead, Barns [sic], Bickford, Walthall & Gwathmey. Prayer by Rev. Jas. N. Cusick.
Minutes read & approved. Brn. A. M. Poindexter & Cusick were invited to seats. The Treasurer reported receipts for past month amounting to $1244.12.
Letters from Rev. R. Babcock Cor. secy of Am. & For. Bible Society, giving information of an appropriation by them, without the authority or consent of this Board, of five hundred Dolls, to bro. Shuck to aid him in the circulation of the Chinese N. Testament, having been received; on motion, the subject was laid on the table for the present.
Letter was recvd. from Rev. John Micou declining the appointment of Agent for Mississippi - on motion the Cor. Secy was requested to seek a suitable agent for that State.
Letter from bro. L. M. Cohen of Furman University with reference to missionary appointment was referred to the Cor. secy.
Letters were received from brn. Yates, Pearcy & Shuck of date Dec. last, informing of the death of sister Eliza G. Shuck. The following resolutions recommended by the Comtee. on China Missions were unanimously adopted and ordered to be published in the Journal.
Resd. 1. That the Board have heard with unfeigned sorrow of the decease, on the 21st Nov. last, of Sister Eliza G, wife of our Missionary, Rev. J. L. Shuck, of Shanghai, China.
2. That while they feel most sensibly, and deeply deplore the loss to the cause of Christ - to the heathen - to themselves, and to the family and friends, occasioned by her removal, they nevertheless cannot fail to recognise the hand of God in this event - and knowing that He ever doeth what is right, would bow in humble submission to his will, & fervently pray for his sustaining and sanctifying grace.
3. That the cor. secy. be, and is hereby instructed to tender to our brother, so soon again smitten of God, to the Mission at Shanghai, and to the family and friends of the deceased in this Country our sincere sympathy in this their deep affliction.
Resolved furthermore. 1. That in the opinion of this Board it well becomes themselves, with their beloved brethren,
