On motion the report of the Special Comtee laid on the table at the last meeting was taken up, read, and adopted as follows -
"The Com'tee to whom was referred the subject of continuing two Secretaries of the Board, after careful consideration, beg leave to report;
The work which the Board requires to be done may be divided into four departments.
1st correspondence with missionaries, the superintendence of their outfit and embarkation, and the proper arrangements for their support, comfort, and efficiency in foreign fields. 2nd an extensive home correspondence, needed for the selection of missionaries, and for exciting a deeper interest and more active co-operation among the churches. 3d Editing the Journal and Commission, with general efforts to promote their circulation & usefulness. 4th attending the State Conventions and other large denominational meetings, and such duties as are appropriate to a general agency. Is one Secretary adequate to the performance of all these labors? Clearly not. However well qualified & dilligent [sic], he wd fail to perform them efficiently, or even to perform them at all. Besides if the Board is not recreant to its high trust, it must look forward to the gradual enlargement of its plans, until they shall correspond in magnitude with the resources of the Baptists of the South & West, and the vastness & importance of the work.
