GREENVILLE
Letter from Rev. Z. B. Roberts
Our Missionaries are now required to report regularly to the brethren,
Yates or Day, that thus we may have more frequent infonnation from
them. The following is the report of Brother Roberts, who has been
recently settled as Pastor at Greenville:
GREENVILLE, March 5, 1858
DEAR BRO. Yates — I beg leave to drop you these few
lines touching my charge in this county; and, in doing so, I feel to
thank God that I found the Church still praying for the conversion
of the world and a revival of grace in their hearts. On my arrival
here I was cordially received by the Church, and after attending to
my domestic affairs I, with I trust becoming gravity, entered upon
my pastoral duties. On the 16th of February I was called upon to
visit an afflicted Sister, who, in the shades of death, had almost
come. I talked with her about her eternal state and inquired into
her hope of acceptance with God. She looked at me, smiled and
said, "I await my Maker's will, who will not leave nor forsake me."
I then prayed with her, commended her to God and left her. In a
few hours she died. I preached her funeral, by request, from Job;
14c, 14v.
I visited the Brethren at Lexington lately and engaged to
preach for them once in every two weeks. Last Lord's-day I
preached at Farmersville, it being sacrament season, from Luke;
22c., 15v. At night, preached from John; 19c., 15v. At Greenville
Church there were 13 mourners who bowed at the altar; five of
whom, up to this date, hopefully converted, and the work is yet
going on with much interest; crowded church every night. At four
o'clock this afternoon we hear experiences. Pray for us.
I received the sum of 20 dollars from Captain Pannel and
eight from Mr. Harriete to aid us in building a pulpit. It was a free
gift last night in church. A few more dollars and then I will start to
complete our church.
Very kindly yours,
Z. B. ROBERTS
