Letter from L. Moon to Mattie, August 10, 1912

Tengchowfu, Shantung, China, Aug. 10, 1912. My dear Mattie, I was very pleased to receive your letter of July 7th enclosing two photographs. I suppose you failed to put in Clara's picture of which you wrote. I never saw your father after he was about six years old. His mother brought him to Virginia twice. The first time, they remained, I think, over a year. The second visit was shorter. She sent me a picture of him as a youth & I also have a daguerreotype of him as a child about two years old. Your grandmother wrote asking me for a picture after your father's death. I sent the first picture above mentioned, not being able to find the other at that time. Recently I came upon it & am saving it to take to your mother. Being in a case, it would be troublesome to send by post. One half the case is gone. You do not look well & strong in your photograph. I fear you work too hard & have too much responsibility. What is your chum's name? She looks full of fun & as if she enjoys life. I am very pleased with my nephew's face, but do not admire what he holds in his hands. Tell him to imitate a Chinese teacher with whom I have dealings. I do not
