Letter from J. L. Holmes to Bro. Cabaniss, February 8, 1861

Chefou, Feb 8th 1861 Dear Bro. Cabaniss, Here we are at last settled in Shantung___ What we have been hoping for, and waiting for and praying for so long a time is now realized;--China is opened to the preaching of the Gospel in all its length and breadth.___ It may be that in particular places there will be a temporary reluctance manifested in carrying out the provisions of the treaty, but on the whole there seems to me to be but little doubt but what we will be allowed to go any and everywhere we please and preach the Gospel.___ The French treaty expressly provides that the French priests shall be allowed to preach and build chapels any where in the Empire they may wish
