Africa Cape Palmas Station Letter from Brother B. J. Drayton Cape Palmas, Oct. 20, 1 849 Dear Brother, — Since the date of my last reports, there has been no material change in affairs here. As a general thing, the work has every appearance of success, and we have also the privilege to report one candidate for baptism. Many are hanging about the outskirt of the fold as it were, seeming to be desirous to lay aside the world, but Satan still holds his grasp. May the spirit of the Lord interpose, and relieve these captive souls from spiritual bondage. The church has taken fresh courage in the work of the Lord, pressing forward toward the mark. We are in want of suitable men in the church to fill offices. I have no one with me of right qualifications to assist in these functions-none that can speak in public to edify. Are there any among my colored brethren who feel that the Lord has called them to work for him, or to preach the gospel to their degraded brethren? Let them come. The natives are still anxious to hear the gospel, and to have their children educated-still looking out for some good man or men, to come and occupy their lands, and open a general system for their children to be taught the book. This readiness on their part is quite an encouragement. This desire cannot be without some moving impulse from above; for otherwise, they would not call for that which is directly opposed to their manners, and against the will of the prince of darkness who leads them. In hearing the word of truth, they listen with becoming respect and attention; every eye is fixed on the speaker, and it would appear by their countenance, that every heart was open. They whisper not during the time of service. If any remark should strike their attention with force, they stare at each other and utter a deep groan. Day School This department of our labor was commenced on the first of February, 1 849. Soon after my arrival we had 20 children, and since that time it has increased to 38 fine looking, attentive pupils. They bid fair to become a blessing to this place. I had the
