Rev. Reuben Ford, of Richmond, Va.,
sends us the following good news :
"The meeting- which wc commenced
the day you were with us, has already re-
Milted in great good and is .-till in progress,
twenty persons have made a profession of
faith in Cliri-l, seven of whom I have bap
tized. I expect on next Sunday to bap.
tiz.e seven or eight more, to God be all Hie
glory."
Rev. Charles II. Stillwell, Of Rome, Ga.,
vvlio was formerly a missionary of the Do¬
mestic Hoard, lias written us a very inter¬
esting account of thc progress of the good
cau-e under lii.s charge, which we should
like to give entire, had wo space. W’e
cannot Ibthear, however, from publishing
thc following extract:
“ The present is thc seventh year of my
connection with the church in this city, a<
their pastor. During two years of that
time I have been partly sustained by libe-
lal contributions from your Treasury, and
I feel that it will not lie inappropriate for
me to communicate to you some facts
touching our past history and present con¬
dition. Thc church in Rome is now a
strong, self-sustaining chinch, possessing
a beautiful and substantial house of wor¬
ship. To God lie all llie praise and glory.
The return to tho Association for 1813,
shews a membership of 30, and when I
look charge of the church in 18-19 il vyas
Ic», than that number. Since then there
has been an accession of 181 members,
73 by Baptism, and the rest by letter."
Rev. S. L. Summer, of Tennncssc, has
moved to Kentucky. The Hoard having
aided liiirr lor two year, among lire moun¬
tains of East Tennessee, could not in ac¬
cordance with our established rule con¬
tinue appropriations, though brother Sum¬
mers Iras proved himself to be a good mis¬
sionary. Accompanying his last report he
writes :
" Thc cause has been quite prosperous
on my field during thc last year, so far as
additions arc concerned.”
Rev. E. J. Owen, of St- Louis, is yet
prosecuting his pastoral labors with the
Z ion church. He speaks thus of her
prospects:
"The numbers of our little Zion are
continually growing in piety and useful
ness. To-morrow, God willing, I shall
lead another obedient convert to the vva
ters of our Jordan, (Mississippi.”)

Death of a Missionniy,
As informed by our exchange papers,
among the slain by the fearful calamity on
the Pacific Railroad, was the Rev. John
Teasdale, a missionary of thc Domestic
Hoard. At (lie time of writing this we
have no information as to particulars.—
Brother Teasdale was one of our best and
most successful Missionaries, and was Hie
pastor of thc 3d Baptist Church in Saint
Louis. We shall doubtless soon receive
definite information, when thc Hoard will
take such action as is befitting thc sad
catastrophe.
Love Lettciy.
We call these love letters because love
to Jesus prompted thc benefaction they
enclosed, and we always love lo receive
just such tokens of kindness :
INDIAN DEPARTMENT.
To tho Baptists of tho South.
Dear llrethren :— Wc are, or ought to
be, a great people. This I have believed
ever since I lelt tho Lutheran church anil
connected myself with the Baptist frater¬
nity. I have, however, discovered, since
I became Corresponding Secretary for the
Domestic Mission Hoard, that in our Mis¬
sionary operations, we have at least two
faults, viz: We arc either loo fad ox too
sloic. In other words, we arc apt to move
too tardily in thc right direction, and too ra¬
pidly in the i cron/p. Hut allow mo lo explain
myself. At present there is considerable
interest manifested for tho benefit of our
Southern Indians. Thc churches seem lo
be convinced that something ought to be
done for tiie spiritual welfare of Hie “ Red
Man." Associations arc taking up this
matter. Now this is all perfectly right—
ju»t as it should be. Take up tho matter
ol Indian Missions, brethren, hut be sure
to take it up at the right end, and work in
the right way.
The plans by which some brethren pro¬
pose to conduct Indian Missions, arc,
1st. Through a committee of a church
or churches. They would select a Mis¬
sionary, open a correspondence with him,
receive his reports, and transmit his sala¬
ry by mail.
2ndly. By Executive Boards of district
Associations. These committees and
Hoards to ad independently of existing
organizations, though the Missionaries
they propose supfasrling may be on the
same field occupied by the General Do¬
mestic Hoard of Missions, and voluntarily
and legally transferred to it. Now against
these schemes— doubtlesi entered upon
with the best intentions— I beg leave to
file the following objections, with re¬
marks: ll;W
First. They imply distrust of -thc'JDo-'
mestic Board. Were' Such a thought ..be-
iieved to be general in tho denomination,
